Upper Lake (Bhojtal)
April 2023

Bhojtal, previously called Upper Lake, is a vast body of water situated on the west side of Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh in India. The lake plays a crucial role in providing drinking water to the city’s inhabitants, supplying approximately 30 million gallons of water per day to roughly 40% of its population. Bhoj Wetland comprises the Bada Talaab (बड़ा तलाब) and Chhota Talaab(छोटा तालाब), translating to big lake and small lake, respectively, in Hindi.

The history of Upper Lake Bhopal dates back to the 11th century when Raja Bhoj, a renowned king and patron of arts and culture, ordered the construction of the lake. The lake was built to serve as a source of water for the nearby city of Bhojpal, which later became Bhopal. Over the centuries, Upper Lake Bhopal has played a crucial role in the city’s development and growth.

During the British colonial period, Upper Lake Bhopal was used for recreational purposes by the British officials stationed in the city. The lake was also used for fishing and boating. After India gained independence in 1947, Upper Lake Bhopal became a popular tourist destination and a source of livelihood for local fishermen.

Today, Upper Lake Bhopal is facing several challenges due to pollution and encroachment. The lake is heavily polluted due to the discharge of untreated sewage and industrial waste. The encroachment of the lake’s catchment area has also led to a reduction in its water-holding capacity.

To address these issues, the government of Madhya Pradesh has launched several initiatives to clean up and restore Upper Lake Bhopal. The government has set up sewage treatment plants to treat the wastewater before it is discharged into the lake. The government has also launched a campaign to remove encroachments from the lake’s catchment area.

Despite the challenges facing Upper Lake Bhopal, there is hope for its future. The government’s efforts to clean up and restore the lake are already showing positive results. The water quality of the lake has improved, and the fish population has increased. The government’s plans to develop the lake’s tourism potential are also expected to generate employment opportunities for local residents.

Bhojtal is not only a significant historical landmark but also a vital source of drinking water and a popular tourist destination. The lake’s rich history and cultural significance make it a must-visit destination for anyone visiting Bhopal. While the lake is facing several challenges, the government’s efforts to restore and rejuvenate it are expected to ensure its survival for generations to come.
